How to Replace Robot Vacuum Side Brushes
Side brushes sweep debris from edges and corners into the robot's suction path. Their arms bend and splay with use, and once they do, edge cleaning suffers. Replacement is usually a pull-off, push-on job.
These are general instructions. Exact access panels, latches and part orientation vary by model, always follow your device manufacturer's manual first.
When to replace it
- Brush arms are bent, splayed or missing tips
- Debris is left along walls and in corners
- The brush spins but no longer touches the floor evenly
What you need
- Small screwdriver (only if the brush is screwed in)
Step by step
- 1
Switch the device off and unplug it (or remove the battery) before starting.
- 2
Turn the device over to access the brush area.
- 3
Remove the old brush: pull it straight off its post, or undo the single retaining screw if present.
- 4
Clear hair and debris from the brush post and surrounding area.
- 5
Press the new brush onto the post (or refit the screw) until secure.
- 6
Spin the brush by hand to confirm it rotates freely.
- Tip: Replace brushes in pairs when a set is supplied, so wear stays even.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Installing left and right brushes on the wrong sides when they are marked L/R
- Pressing the brush on at an angle, it should click straight onto the post
- Overtightening the retaining screw on screwed-in designs
- Replacing only one brush when a matched pair is supplied
Pro tips from manufacturers & repair experts
- Turn the robot off and flip it onto a towel to avoid scratches and accidental start-up.
- Hold the brush still while loosening the screw so it doesn't spin with the screwdriver.
- Seat the new brush squarely on its post before tightening, forcing it can strip the mount.
- Reset the brush-life counter in the companion app if it tracks one.
Frequently asked questions
Do side brushes need tools to replace?
Most pull straight off their post. Some models use a single small screw, check your robot's manual.
Why replace brushes in pairs?
Wear stays even, so edge cleaning performance stays consistent on both sides of the robot.
The new brush came off during cleaning. Why?
It was not pressed fully onto the post. Remove it, check the post for debris, and push it on straight until it seats.
