How to Replace a Vacuum Dust Bag

The dust bag is both the dirt container and the first stage of filtration. An overfilled bag chokes suction long before it looks full from the outside. Swapping it is a clean, tool-free job when done carefully.

FIG · Replacing a dust bagNTS

These are general instructions. Exact access panels, latches and part orientation vary by model, always follow your device manufacturer's manual first.

When to replace it

  • The bag-full indicator shows red (on models that have one)
  • Suction drops and picking up debris takes multiple passes
  • A musty smell when the vacuum runs
  • The bag feels firm and heavy when you press it through the compartment

What you need

  • No tools required

Step by step

  1. 1

Switch the device off and unplug it (or remove the battery) before starting.

  2. 2

Open the dustbin or bag compartment.

  3. 3

Remove the full bag by its collar or tab, keeping it upright to avoid spills.

  4. 4

Slide the new bag's collar fully onto the mount until it clicks or seats.

  5. 5

Close the compartment and confirm the bag-full indicator (if present) resets.

  • Tip: Do not reuse single-use bags - sealing performance drops after the first fill.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Squeezing a bag that is the wrong size into the holder, it tears or blocks airflow
  • Pulling the bag out by the cardboard instead of the collar tab, spills dust everywhere
  • Reusing a single-use bag, the seal and filtration degrade after the first fill
  • Closing the compartment on a bag collar that is not fully seated

Pro tips from manufacturers & repair experts

  • Use the bag-full indicator or a drop in suction as your cue, don't guess.
  • Lift the old bag by its sealing tab so dust stays inside.
  • Make sure the new bag clicks fully into its holder so the opening lines up with the intake; a loose fit leaks dust.
  • Reusable cloth bags clogged with fine dust (ash, sand, plaster) should be replaced rather than washed.

Frequently asked questions

Are aftermarket bags as good as original ones?

Quality aftermarket bags made for your exact model use the same collar fit and multi-layer filtration. Match the bag to your exact model number and check the compatibility list on the product page.

How full is too full?

Replace the bag when the indicator shows full or suction drops, bags lose airflow well before they are physically full.

What if dust leaked inside the compartment?

Wipe the compartment with a dry cloth before fitting the new bag, and check that the motor filter behind the bag is still clean.
