How to Replace a Vacuum Drive Belt

The drive belt transfers motor power to the roller brush. Belts stretch, glaze and eventually snap, and a slipping belt means the roller stops agitating even though the vacuum sounds normal. Replacing one needs only a screwdriver on most uprights.

FIG · Replacing a drive beltNTS

These are general instructions. Exact access panels, latches and part orientation vary by model, always follow your device manufacturer's manual first.

When to replace it

  • The roller does not spin, or spins slowly, while the motor runs
  • A burning rubber smell during use
  • The belt looks shiny, cracked or stretched when inspected
  • The vacuum picks up poorly on carpet but fine on hard floors

What you need

  • Screwdriver for the base plate

Step by step

  1. 1

Switch the device off and unplug it (or remove the battery) before starting.

  2. 2

Remove the base plate to expose the brush roll and belt.

  3. 3

Lift the brush roll out and slip the old belt off the motor spindle.

  4. 4

Loop the new belt over the motor spindle, then stretch it onto the brush roll.

  5. 5

Refit the brush roll, rotate it by hand to center the belt, and close the plate.

  • Tip: A new belt feels tight - that is normal. It seats after a few minutes of running.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Buying a belt by eye, belt size must match your exact model
  • Routing the belt twisted around the motor spindle
  • Stretching the belt over the roller with a tool, it can nick and weaken the rubber
  • Closing the base plate before spinning the roller by hand to center the belt

Pro tips from manufacturers & repair experts

  • Always unplug the vacuum before opening the brush housing.
  • A stretched, glazed, cracked or slack belt needs replacing, not cleaning.
  • Inspect the brush roll at the same time, the two wear together.
  • Work the old belt off the pulley gradually rather than forcing it, to avoid damaging the pulley.

Frequently asked questions

The new belt feels very tight. Is that wrong?

No, a new belt is supposed to feel tight. It seats after a few minutes of running.

How often do belts need replacing?

There is no fixed interval, inspect the belt when you change the roller or when brush performance drops, and replace it if it is stretched, glazed or cracked.

The belt snapped again quickly. Why?

Usually the roller is jammed by wrapped hair or a bad bearing, which overloads the belt. Clean or replace the roller before fitting another belt.
