How to Fit a Replacement Portafilter

A replacement portafilter must match your machine's group head diameter and lug (ear) design exactly, there is no universal size. When it matches, fitting it is simple: insert, lock, and check the seal with a blank shot.

FIG · Replacing a filterNTS

These are general instructions. Exact access panels, latches and part orientation vary by model, always follow your device manufacturer's manual first.

When to replace it

  • The original portafilter handle is cracked or the lugs are worn
  • The basket no longer sits tight in the old portafilter
  • You want a bottomless (naked) portafilter to watch extraction

What you need

  • No tools required in most cases

Step by step

  1. 1

Switch the device off and unplug it (or remove the battery) before starting.

  2. 2

Open the filter compartment - usually a latch, cover or dustbin release. Check your device manual for the exact location.

  3. 3

Remove the old filter and note which way it was seated (airflow arrows, tabs or rails).

  4. 4

Do not wash the new filter unless it is explicitly marked washable.

  5. 5

Seat the new filter in the same orientation as the old one until it sits flush.

  6. 6

Close the compartment and run the device briefly to confirm normal sound and airflow.

  • Tip: Replace filters at the interval recommended by your device manufacturer.
  • Tip: If the filter does not sit flush, do not force it - recheck the model compatibility.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Buying by brand alone, lug count, lug thickness and diameter must all match your exact model
  • Forcing the lock when the portafilter does not turn smoothly, a mismatch can damage the group head
  • Forgetting to press the basket in until it sits flush
  • Locking the portafilter while the group gasket is worn, leaks will follow even with a perfect portafilter

Pro tips from manufacturers & repair experts

  • Rinse the portafilter and basket with hot water after every use to stop coffee oils building up.
  • Deep-clean periodically with an espresso-machine cleaning tablet to remove baked-on oils.
  • Check the basket holes for clogging, blocked holes cause slow or uneven extraction.
  • Dry the portafilter instead of leaving it wet in the group head between uses.
  • Replace the basket or portafilter when worn holes or damaged lugs affect extraction or locking.

Frequently asked questions

Where should the handle point when locked?

Roughly perpendicular to the machine. If it turns well past that, the group gasket is probably worn and should be replaced too.

Will a bottomless portafilter fit my machine?

If it is made for your exact group head size and lug design, yes. Check the compatibility list on the product page.

Do I need a new basket with a new portafilter?

Replacement portafilters usually include a basket. Your existing baskets fit if they match the same diameter.
